Camp Layout and Leave No Trace

The Serving Pagoda (left), built of bamboo, houses our coffee preparation, serving, and washing areas. Behind the Serving Pagoda and extending to the right is the Bamboo Grove, our seating area. It is a shade structure built of bamboo with a bright fabric roof. We hope to entice visitors to VICC to relax and mingle as they enjoy their coffee.

Leave No Trace Plan
1. Planning to Leave No Trace
  • We use materials for our campsite that reduce waste. This includes construction, food preparation, serving, and breakdown.
  • Before arrival on the playa, we communicate to all camp members that "Leave No Trace" is a core tenet of Burning Man and our camp. We talk, in practical terms, about how everyone can help out to ensure that we succeed in this goal.
  • We reduce potential waste that we bring to the playa by removing all possible packaging before we leave home. This includes both VICC supplies and personal supplies.
  • We use reusable materials to serve our coffee, as well as for our own meals. We use non-disposable tumblers, coffee presses, and stir sticks.
  • We provide a trash container in our coffee service area.

2. Our Very Own Earth Guardians

Jim Rudoff and Ken Bonnin are our appointed Leave No Trace experts. We will:

  • Ensure that the camp stays clean before, during, and after the event
  • Get help with the cleanup process from campmates, both VICC and Avalon Space Station, as needed to ensure that no trace is left
  • Lead the VICC Leave No Trace education effort, both pre-and on-playa
  • Lead the camp set-up and break-down to ensure clean construction and deconstruction
  • Perform the final Leave No Trace sweep, be the last members of VICC to depart, and participate in the Avalon Space Station final sweep
  • Do anything and everything else necessary to ensure that we Leave No Trace.

3. Leaving No Trace Every Day

  • Each day, throughout the day and at the close of our coffee service, we will perform a sweep of the area.
  • We will clean as we go.
  • We stop MOOP before it happens.

4. Ensuring that We've Left No Trace: Final Camp Clean-Up

  • As part of the Avalon Space Station, we will coordinate our clean-up efforts with the other member camps.
  • We will take all of our trash home, to be disposed of properly. All recyclables that are not given to Recycling Camp will likewise be brought home and disposed of properly. Used coffee grounds are brought back to San Francisco for composting.
